Jupiter, Venus and the moon make a smile

Last December 2, I was going home after school. It was around 8 in the evening somehow I gazed upon the sky and look I saw a smiley in the sky. The two stars forming the eyes and the shape of the moon clinching up the smile. It was really cool to see this once in a lifetime event, unfortunately I wasn't able to get pictures of it since I was in Divisoria and scared that my cellphone will be snatched. Well, the next day It was featured in the inquirer magazine. Amazing!

From the inquirer

MANILA, Philippines—Now showing in the Philippine night sky: A smiling face formed by the rare alignment of planets Venus and Jupiter and directly below it, the crescent moon.

Jose Pepe Mendoza, of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), told the Philippine Daily Inquirer Tuesday that Venus had aligned with Jupiter to form the right and left eyes respectively, while the moon, on its first phase, had formed a happy mouth.

Mendoza said there was a similar “planetary conjunction” of the same planets in February “but only in the morning sky ... It is pretty rare to see this in the evening sky.”

He explained that the moon was “waxing crescent into its first quarter” together with Venus and Jupiter against the background of the constellation Sagittarius.

The conjunction can be viewed, Mendoza said, in the country’s south-western horizon.

No smileys in US, Europe

The smiling face can also be seen in Australia. However, the sky show in the United States and Europe will have Jupiter, Venus and the moon in a frown, a survey of news reports on the Web showed.

Mendoza said the unusual alignment will be visible until January next year. Astronomers are in for another heavenly treat, he added, because on Dec. 13, there will be a meteor shower.

Is a smiley in the heavens a good or bad omen?

Good luck?

“There are people who believe that the smiling face would bring good luck. Or good results in whatever one undertakes,” Mendoza said.

However, he could not say if the alignment would be good for the country’s political situation.

According to an astrologer, Resti Santiago, the alignment bodes well for President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in forming alliances and partnerships—a fortuitous coincidence, as her allies are marshalling moves to amend the Constitution allegedly to extend her term.
Her good luck, however, could be short-lived, he warned.

Turbulence next week

Basing his analysis on the astrological chart of the President, Santiago said: “Her chart shows that these days, there will be some luck for her in forming partnerships and alliances. This good luck has been activated by the recent alignment of three heavenly bodies ... but next week will be a turbulent time because the sun and Mars will form a negative alignment with Saturn and Uranus.”

Nonetheless, Santiago said, the “smiling face” will bring good luck since Venus and Jupiter are considered lucky planets.

Also in luck are those born in the signs of Taurus, Capricorn and Virgo, he said.

Console vs Online Gaming

I remember the first time I played console games with the Nintendo system. Those were Street Fighter and the famous Super Mario Bros. It me took countless hours of playing - until I finished the game and then play them all over again. Meanwhile, new Playstation and PS2 games have been published to grab a significant portion of the market share.

With the evolution of technology, game developers have crossed through another medium called the Internet and massively multiplayer PC games have been produced. Thus was born the MMORPG.

Which is better? You decide.

CONSOLE GAMES

A big advantage of console gaming over online games is that you don’t have to update the hardware to play. Console games are also compact, you can bring it whenever you want to. Another advantage of console games is you can feel at ease playing. Just sit back and relax while playing with your friends.

Now let’s look at the darker side, a somewhat negative aspect of consoles would be new developments and upgrades in software and hardware. This means you will have to buy their new product just to play. An example is Sony’s PS2 to PS3. Another setback: some game titles are offered in other consoles but not on the rival ones. An example would be Metal Gear Solid series and Tekken which are published in the Playstation but aren’t offered in the rival Xbox systems. This means you have buy their consoles just to play the game. Note that gaming isn’t cheap.

ONLINE GAMES

With online games, there is a wide range of games to choose from - from action games to casual games and more. The community is also a big advantage. As a member of the online community, you get to meet a lot of people worldwide and gain friends or guildmates/clubs and then play together while defeating bosses or finding a rare item. People usually want to express themselves through the virtual world, and online games offer customization through your characters. Game developers also release new updates and content giving you more reasons to play the games and be stronger (or just look cooler with your character.)

One sad fact of online gaming is that it’s not easy for game makers to develop new updates and content. Players constantly want new innovations. If game developers couldn’t give new updates, surely their community (and the game) will falter.

Choose what suits you the best.

Deepest Diving Pool in the World

Nemo 33, located in Belgium is a small recreational scuba diving center. The pool is 33 feet deep filled with rooms and passages that await the divers who want to venture in. It was designed by John Bernaets, also a Belgian and a diving instructor as a multi-purpose diving instruction, recreational, and film production facility.

It has been opened since 2004 attracting tourists and divers. Not your usual indoor scuba diving activity. I wonder if our country have our own recreational scuba diving center. LOL
